The internet is our gateway to an entire world of opportunity and knowledge. Whether you’re going online to chat with friends, shop, run a business, or just learn something new, the possibilities on the internet are endless.

If you want to take part in this world of endless possibilities, you’ll need a website. However, creating an effective website takes special knowledge. You can hire a web developer to create your site, but first, you need to make sure they are qualified. If you don’t, you might end up with a website that isn’t what you wanted, or worse, your site may not work at all.

In this article, we’ll go over 7 questions to ask your web developer to make sure they are qualified and can deliver the website that you want.

Questions to Ask Your Web Developer

The questions below will help you determine a number of important factors, including the developer’s experience, work style, and dedication. However, they will also help you determine other important factors like skill level, their ability to work on a team, and their communication style.

Make sure to ask all of these questions before making a decision about whether or not to hire a web developer

1. How Much Experience Do You Have?

When it comes to web developers, lots of experience is critical to creating a great website. You need to find out how much experience your web developer has to truly gauge their ability to do their jobs.

While asking how much experience they have is a good start, there are other ways to frame this question as well. You can also ask them what their workload is like, how many websites they have created, or how long they have been a web developer.

2. Do You Have a Portfolio of Examples?

Taking a web developer’s word on their experience or their style is risky. The best way to make sure they are experienced and can deliver the site you want is to ask for a portfolio of their work.

If they do not have a portfolio of work to show you, chances are they are not experienced or have not created work that is good enough to go into a portfolio. If they do have a portfolio, it shows that they have experience but it also shows they are proud enough of their work to show it off.

Be sure to take a close look at the portfolio of work. It will give you lots of clues about their skill level and whether or not they can deliver the site you are looking for.

For example, if you are designing a site that is sales-oriented, be sure to look for any sales sites that the developer may have created.

3. What Type of Sites Have You Developed?

At the end of the day, there are major differences between different kinds of websites. While different sites might work the same at a basic level, their actual appearance and function might be completely different.

For example, a product website will need a flashy layout and design, whereas an educational site might need more elements like videos and additional security.

By asking your web developer what kind of sites they have developed, you can get a better idea of what type of work they do. This will help you determine whether your web developer has the skills or experience to help you create the page you want.

4. How Long Will It Take for You to Design My Site?

When it comes to budgeting, this may be the most important question of all. The timeline for completing a website will help you determine how much the project will cost. It will also help you figure out other aspects of your site, such as when to start shipping items or when to announce the opening of your site.

You may not have all the information your developer needs to answer this question, but that is alright. You can ask other questions to get an idea of how long it will take to create your site.

You can ask how long it takes on average to complete a project, or how long it takes to complete projects of a certain kind. This will give you a rough idea of how long it will take to complete your site, and allows you to plan accordingly.

5. How Does Your Work Make Sites More Successful?

While this question might seem silly, it will actually help you determine what benefits you can get from hiring certain developers. Having them explain what they did to improve the sites of previous clients and how those improvements affected the bottom line will give you great insights into their performance and their specialties.

For example, a developer’s ability to drive web traffic might be great for some clients, while increased site traffic might not help other clients.

Asking this question will help you determine exactly how your developer can help you and whether or not you want to use their services.

6. How Do You Communicate With Clients During a Project?

Communication in a web development project is crucial. You need to be in constant contact with your developer to let them know about project changes, get project updates, and monitor their progress.

Determining how a developer communicates with clients will give you a good idea about their work style and whether that will fit your needs. You may need a developer to be very responsive due to the constantly changing nature of your project. You also might need a developer who is more autonomous and does most of their work on their own.

It will also indicate their willingness to take on edits and other feedback during the process, which can make or break a project.

7. Are You Willing to Do Revisions?

This is one of the most important questions to ask your developer. Some developers have a huge workload and cannot take the time to do further revisions once a project is done. On the other hand, some developers are willing to do revisions until you are satisfied with the project.

Determining this process early on in the interview process will give you a better idea about their work ethic, their workload, and how they handle working with clients.
