App design is a complex process. Creating an application that can support intricate tasks, while simultaneously being simple enough for the everyday user is a challenge.

Over the years, we have come across the same mistakes made by businesses when designing apps. These mistakes are detrimental to customer engagement.

Continue reading to found out the 9 most common mistakes made when designing an app so you can avoid an app faux pas.

1. Disorganised Content Layout

The content within the application is what interests people to use your app in the first place.

If your content is poorly structured, it makes it difficult for the user to access the information they need. Most users don’t read a whole page of information and instead scan the headers, bullet points, and summaries.

Always create enough white space on a page loaded with content. Ensure that this white space is visible in all versions of your app (e.g. mobile, tablet). Leave out unnecessary content, and make sure all content is relevant.

2. Loading Time Is Too Long

Less is more when designing an app.

Animations look great and do grab the attention of the user, but they can also slow down the loading time. If this happens, it’s likely the user will look for the same information on another app or website that loads faster.

3. Not Using Responsive Design

Nearly half of all searches are completed on mobile devices. Having an app and website that displays correctly on mobile devices is important.

Google penalises any website that does not use responsive design, so it’s important to incorporate this into your website and app.

4. Screen Resolution Issues

You may have previously landed on a website that doesn’t adapt to mobile size. Don’t let this be your website or application.

Horizontal scroll is a huge no! Good designers will always develop an app that fits and adapts to different screen sizes.

5. Not Considering the Target Audience

Your target audience is the single most important aspect of app development. Without a target audience in mind, how do you design an app and create content?

You need to decide on your target audience and include the correct fonts, colours and layout to suit their preferences. These design elements should form the basis of your company branding and logo too.

6. Ads Are in the Wrong Place

Don’t use full-screen ads, especially without a visible close button. This will drive users away from your site. Tasteful ad placement is a good idea, providing it doesn’t cover up your content.

7. Not Linking Social Accounts

Always link your social media accounts. Social media is a huge aspect of digital marketing and can boost your ROI. You can use social media engagement to drive traffic to your app or website, and vice-versa.

8. Call to Action Missing

Always give your customers a way of contacting you or staying in touch. This can be in the form of ‘contact us’, ‘shop now’, ‘sign up’ or ‘add to cart’.

9. Complex Sign Up Forms

Keep contact forms simple. You are likely to get more customers to sign up if you ask for their name and email address only.
